Grant Lucas is a sports reporter for The Bulletin in beautiful Bend, Oregon, having settled in the Pacific Northwest after trekking from the east coast.
After Grant and his family made stops in Virginia, Pennsylvania, North Carolina and Utah, the Lucases arrived in Bend to bury roots. But as Grant and his brother went off to their respective colleges, the parents relocated once more – back east, to Florida.
At Linfield College, after stepping away from baseball, Grant began covering sports for The Linfield Review, becoming the sports editor during his senior year. At the same time, Grant frequently wrote for The Forest Grove News-Times as a sports writer covering everything from football to foosball and was brought on as the nation’s only Division III men’s golf writer for NCAA.com.
Grant received a degree in mass communications from Linfield in 2010 and while continuing to write for The Forest Grove News-Times, he was hired as a sports reporter for the Portland Trail Blazers. There, he produced game previews and recaps while also covering practices and special events as the Trail Blazers advanced to the NBA playoffs.
As the NBA entered a lockout in 2011, Grant moved to Eugene and began freelancing for The Register-Guard, covering prep sports. Following a brief stint with the Springfield Times, where Grant covered high school and community sports as well as the Olympic Trials at Hayward Field, Grant returned to Bend in 2012. Although he started as a part-timer, Grant quickly became a full-time reporter as he took on the role as The Redmond Spokesman’s lone sports writer. A year later, Grant became the prep sports coordinator, writing weekly columns – as well as a prep football column in the fall. On top of that, during the summer, Grant covers the Bend Elks, a West Coast League summer collegiate baseball team, and writes weekly golf columns.
